Tunde Onakoya, a Nigerian chess master, made history on Saturday, clinching a new Guinness World Record for the longest uninterrupted chess marathon.
Sharing the exciting news on his official X account, he pledged to extend the feat to 60 hours, underscoring the charitable objective: supporting the education of underprivileged African children globally.
Surpassing the previous milestone of 56 hours and 9 minutes, established by Norwegian players, Tunde’s marathon unfolded at the iconic Times Square in New York City.
Teaming up with US counterpart Shawn Martinez, both national masters, Tunde aimed not only to shatter a record but also to spotlight the significance of offering educational opportunities to underprivileged children across Africa.
Joined by Martinez after 23 hours of intense play, the duo persisted in their mission, rallying support from prominent figures such as Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and musicians Davido and Adekunle Gold.
Through their unwavering determination and the outpouring of support, Tunde and Shawn exemplified the potency of unity and compassion in effecting positive change globally.
