“Getting a certificate in this country is like a waste of time” – Nigerian graduate says as he burns his university, NYSC, other certificates for lack of job

Olutimain, an Ajayi Crowther University graduate in history and international studies, recently revealed the reason behind his decision to destroy his original diplomas, which encompassed JAMB, NYSC, Bachelor of Arts, and secondary school credentials.

In a video shared on social media, he explained that the lack of employment opportunities and the current state of affairs in the nation rendered his degrees meaningless, leading him to take the drastic step of destroying his educational certificates.

He said, “Getting a certificate in this country is like a waste of time.”

Ilenre further emphasized that his certifications held no value, even for international travel.

Expressing his distress, he revealed a week-long struggle to sleep after realizing that none of the tasks he had undertaken in the past 13 years required his educational credentials.

In light of the prevailing circumstances in the nation, he advocated for individuals to consider acquiring practical skills. Ilenre urged parents to allow their children the freedom to explore trades and handicrafts as viable alternatives.

“I finished school in 2010 and did my NYSC in 2010/2011; till today, I haven’t used these certificates to get a job,” Ilenre said.
