Veteran musician King Sunny Ade has paid tribute to the late singer Onyeka Onwenu with a heartfelt vow to always perform their duet “Wait for Me” in her honor.
It is recalled that the legendary songstress, Onyeka Onwenu, passed away on July 30th, 2024.
At the time of her passing, Onyeka Onwenu was 72 years old.
During a condolence visit by the management of the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) to Onyeka Onwenu’s family in Ikoyi, Lagos, King Sunny Ade made a heartfelt vow.
He promised to keep her legacy alive by performing their iconic duet, “Wait for Me,” for the rest of his life, ensuring that her memory endures through the power of music.
He said …
“I will perform ‘Waiting for Me’ on her behalf throughout my life. I have done it several times in different countries, where I gave her the credit.
“When it comes to music that two people have to do together, she used to do more than I did. She would just tap me and say ‘Sunny, don’t worry, let’s take it this way, and it is always good.”
On his part, Orits Williki, popular reggae legend, also described the songstress as someone who believed in the cause of justice.
“She wasn’t somebody we can easily forget. It is sad that she did not reap much of what she fought for.
“Only a few years ago, she got a double Supreme Court judgment on intellectual property. But sad that we have lost her and we know that her legacy is still in our minds.”
