Mykhailo Mudryk emerged as Chelsea’s star signing during the last winter transfer window, securing a move to Stamford Bridge from Shakhtar Donetsk for a significant sum of 100 million euros on an eight-year deal.
Despite the anticipation surrounding the Ukrainian winger’s arrival, Mudryk has not lived up to the high expectations that accompanied his signing. Struggling to cement his place as a regular starter, the Ukraine international has yet to secure a prominent role in the starting lineup for Chelsea.
Throughout the current season, Mudryk has featured in 24 official matches for Chelsea, but only 12 of them have been starts. During these starting appearances, he managed to contribute with four goals and one assist. The challenge now lies in whether Mudryk can rise to meet the initial expectations and solidify his position as a key player for the English club.
Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino clarified in a press conference preceding the Premier League clash against Wolves why Mudryk isn’t receiving the anticipated amount of playing time.
“Now he is on the bench. It’s about the form – if you keep your form and you are the best during every training session. It’s about meritocracy. He has amazing quality and potential, but it’s team game, it’s not tennis,” said the Chelsea boss.
