An arbitration court has ruled that Juventus must pay former striker Cristiano Ronaldo approximately €9.8 million ($10.46 million) in overdue wages. The decision comes after a dispute between the club and the player regarding unpaid salary and bonuses.
Ronaldo, who left Juventus in 2021 to rejoin Manchester United, sought compensation for the outstanding amount. The court’s ruling highlights the importance of contractual obligations in the world of professional football and emphasizes the need for clubs to fulfill their financial commitments to players.
On Wednesday, the Serie A club stated that they are currently assessing the ruling.
Ronaldo, who is currently with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, asserted that he was owed approximately €19.5 million ($20.81 million) in outstanding wages by Juventus, which stemmed from a pay reduction agreed upon during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The arbitration board … ascertained the validity of [Ronaldo’s] compensation reduction agreement in relation to the 2020/21 sporting season,” Juventus said in a statement.
The arbitration tribunal has mandated that the Italian giants must pay half of the amount requested by the 39-year-old.
Ronaldo, who joined Juventus in August 2018, played a pivotal role in securing two consecutive Serie A titles, an Italian Cup, and two Super Cups for the club before departing Italy to reunite with Manchester United in 2021.
