Nigeria’s Super Eagles are about to undergo a major change as their new head coach will be named in the next one to two weeks, according to the nation’s minister of sports, John Enoh. After Jose Peseiro’s term as head coach ends on February 29, 2024, this announcement leaves the national team without a permanent captain.
According to reports, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) attempted to extend Peseiro’s contract after the team’s impressive 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) second-place result. Negotiations, however, broke down because of the Portuguese tactician’s wage demands. Finidi George, the coach of Enyimba, is leading the squad in the interim as head coach.
Even with the temporary appointment, football fans are still worried about the NFF’s alleged lack of promptness in hiring a permanent coach for the Super Eagles. The impending June 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers add to this uneasiness. Asserting the gravity of the situation, the minister of sports said in an interview on Channels Television, “Unfortunately, the senior national team doesn’t have a coach.”
He emphasized the NFF’s primary role in this case and informed the public that talks to hasten the appointment process are still ongoing. Enoh confirmed, “I have been in touch with the NFF because I think Nigerians didn’t expect that after AFCON… it will take as long [to appoint a new coach].”
The minister gave confidence in response to growing pressure, saying, “But NFF is conscious and mindful of our next qualifiers in June.” He also promised that the Super Eagles would have a new coach in charge within “the next one or two weeks at the latest.”
